Do marketers need to pay attention to Elon Musk's xAI? #FutureMonth

Published by

Elon Musk's new AI company, xAI, wants to position itself as the ultimate alternative to ChatGPT, which Musk has accused of being a mouthpiece for the "woke" agenda.

Of course, that’s the kind of thing we’ve all become quietly accustomed to Elon Musk spouting in recent years, given his gradual shift to the far right. But could xAI detach itself from its master’s political contrarianism and stand apart as something altogether more ambitious than the AI app that’s taken the world by storm?

X marks the spot

With a mission to “unravel the mysteries of the universe,” xAI has quickly garnered attention due to the impressive lineup of AI researchers from esteemed companies like Microsoft, Google, and DeepMind, all of whom have joined forces under Musk's leadership.

While the specifics of xAI's projects still remain shrouded in secrecy, reports suggest that the company is set to directly compete with OpenAI, the San Francisco-based startup behind the immensely popular AI chatbot, ChatGPT.

Interestingly, Musk was a co-founder of OpenAI but severed ties with the company in 2018, citing a divergence in vision when OpenAI shifted from a nonprofit to a for-profit entity, backed by substantial funding from Microsoft. Since his departure, Musk has been a vocal critic of OpenAI, accusing it of becoming a closed-source, profit-driven organisation, contrary to his initial intentions.

In a Fox News interview with professional Donald Trump shill Tucker Carlson, Musk tantalisingly hinted at his plans to launch "TruthGPT," an AI model designed to prioritise truth-seeking over what he perceives as the politically biased nature of existing language models like ChatGPT.

Musk's disdain for what he deems "woke" and prone to misinformation models may very well influence the direction xAI takes. Regardless of its product quality, however, xAI is bound to remain in the media spotlight and attract a dedicated following due to Musk's undeniable star power and the way he somehow manages to hold sway on the disenfranchised, despite his obscene, bond villain wealth.

Keep all options open

Whether we like and choose to admit it or not, Musk's entrance into the AI arena carries substantial weight, and marketers should be taking note. According to Mike Kaput, Chief Content Officer at the Marketing AI Institute, the impressive backgrounds of the individuals involved in xAI  at least make it a venture worth monitoring.

Whenever Musk embarks on a new endeavour, disruption is a given. This development serves as further evidence that AI companies will continue to advance rapidly, making it premature to align your AI transformation with a single platform.

The launch of xAI comes at a significant juncture for Twitter, a platform Musk acquired for a reported $44 billion in October last year. Recent policy changes and controversial statements from Musk have led to disgruntled users flocking to alternative platforms like Mastodon and Meta's Twitter-inspired Threads.

Although xAI is not formally part of X Corp, a company Musk founded and merged Twitter, Inc. into earlier this year, xAI's website states its intention to collaborate closely with X (Twitter), Tesla, and other enterprises to advance its mission.

As the marketing industry eagerly anticipates the implications of xAI's entry, it remains too early to predict the exact reverberations. However, the undeniable influence and disruptive tendencies of Elon Musk make it clear that marketers should closely monitor the progress of xAI and be prepared for further advancements in the AI landscape.

Whatever you think of the man, with Musk at the helm, the possibilities are boundless, and marketers must stay attuned to these unfolding developments. Just in case.
